How to get a confirmed train ticket to UP or Bihar? Check out these smart hacks—no agents or Tatkal quota needed.
If you are planning to visit home for Diwali or Chhath Puja, you are likely looking for tickets to UP or Bihar. Here, we show you how to secure a confirmed train ticket without relying on an agent.
If you are preparing to travel to UP or Bihar from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Gujarat, the biggest worry is often securing a confirmed train ticket. Especially during festivals, holidays, or the wedding season, many trains go straight into a waiting list the moment bookings open. Consequently, most people resort to Tatkal tickets or agents.
However, if you cannot get a ticket even through the Tatkal quota, there are ways to increase your chances of securing a confirmed seat without an agent. While none of these methods offer an absolute guarantee, they are smart workarounds worth trying.
Check tickets from nearby stations (large and small)
If you cannot find a ticket from your city to your destination in UP or Bihar, do not limit yourself to booking from just one station. You can also check availability from other large or small stations in the vicinity.
For instance, suppose you need to travel from Delhi to Siwan (Bihar) and there are no seats available on the direct Delhi-Siwan train. Instead of focusing solely on Delhi, look for trains departing from stations like Anand Vihar, New Delhi, or Ghaziabad. Similarly, in Bihar, check stations like Chhapra, Gopalganj, or Deoria alongside Siwan; you might find an available seat.
Don’t rely on just one train
Instead of searching for a single train to UP or Bihar, check multiple trains simultaneously. Look beyond just Rajdhani, Superfast, and Express trains; consider special trains as well. Also, check availability across different classes—such as 3AC and 2AC—in addition to Sleeper class. Sometimes, while the Sleeper class has a long waiting list, seats might still be available in 3AC. Check for GNWL tickets
Train tickets come with various waiting list categories like GNWL, RLWL, PQWL, and TQWL. Among these, GNWL tickets generally have a higher probability of getting confirmed compared to RLWL or PQWL. Therefore, if two trains show a similar waiting list status but one offers GNWL, it is wise to book that one.
Keep your Aadhaar number linked
If you wish to book a ticket the moment bookings open, complete the Aadhaar authentication for your IRCTC account in advance. Users with Aadhaar authentication are granted access to online reservations starting from the first day of the Advance Reservation Period.
Additionally, Aadhaar authentication is mandatory for booking Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets online. In other words, complete this process beforehand rather than wasting time on Aadhaar verification or OTP entry when bookings open.
Avoid this mistake with Tatkal bookings
If you need a Tatkal ticket, do not wait until the last minute to fill in details. Stay logged into your IRCTC account, save passenger information in advance, and have your payment option ready. Most importantly, you do not need an agent for Tatkal bookings; you can book the ticket yourself via the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app.
One more chance before the train departs
Suppose you couldn’t get a ticket initially, but a seat became vacant by the time the reservation chart was prepared. In such a case, be sure to check the ‘Current Booking’ option. Under the Railways’ current booking system, seats that become vacant after chart preparation are booked as confirmed tickets.
VIKALP can also be useful
If your ticket is on the waiting list, you can opt for VIKALP (Alternate Train Accommodation). With this option, the Railways may allocate you a seat on a different train if one is available, instead of your originally chosen train. However, there is no guarantee of a confirmed seat here either. These are simply strategies to improve your chances of securing a confirmed ticket.
