New labor laws came into effect on Friday, and they will now impact freelancers and gig workers. The most significant feature of the new changes is that, for the first time, the government has recognized freelancing and platform work as an official job category.

With the implementation of the new labor laws in the country, millions of people who were previously not covered by any protections will also be able to access social security benefits. This change will strengthen the earnings, security, and career stability of freelancers.

Benefits like PF, ESIC, insurance, and pension will now be included in the mandatory framework for all workers. This will provide freelancers with the same benefits that were previously available only to regular employees. The financial security that comes with long-term work will now be available to freelancers as well.

In addition, all workers will be required to provide an appointment letter. This will serve as official proof for freelancers of their work and their rights. This will significantly reduce disputes related to payment, deadlines, and responsibilities.

Every worker over 40 will be required to undergo a free health checkup every year. Freelancing often lacks health insurance or medical benefits, but now that this is part of the mandatory framework, it will enhance both mental and physical security.

Gig and platform workers will receive legal recognition for the first time. Every food delivery, cab, e-commerce, and online service platform will be required to contribute 1 to 2 percent of their turnover to a social security fund for gig workers. This will provide freelancers with a permanent security fund.

All benefits will be portable through an Aadhaar-linked universal account. This means that whether freelancers change cities, platforms, or work models, their benefits will continue. This ensures both stability and continuity in their career.
