To drive the Vande Bharat train, candidates must have passed 10th grade and an ITI. After passing the Railway Recruitment Board exam, medical tests, and training, any young person can become a loco pilot.

The dream of driving the Vande Bharat Express, one of India's fastest and most modern trains, has now taken hold in the hearts of millions of young people. Becoming a loco pilot, or driver of this gleaming, bullet-like train, requires not only courage but also the right qualifications and training. If you're wondering what education and courses are required to become a pilot of this train, let's find out...

Loco pilots who operate high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat are considered among the most skilled employees of Indian Railways. They ensure the safety, speed, control, and passenger comfort of the train. From starting the train's engine to stopping it precisely at the platform, the loco pilot is responsible for everything.

What are the qualifications?

To operate the Vande Bharat train, you must first become a loco pilot with the Indian Railways. This requires at least a 10th-grade pass. Additionally, you must have an ITI from a recognized institute. Candidates with courses in electrical, mechanical, fitter, or motor mechanic trades are preferred.

Candidates are initially appointed as Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs). Promotions are then granted based on experience and performance. These assistants then progress to become Senior Loco Pilots and then pilots of premium trains like the Vande Bharat.

What is the selection process like?

The Assistant Loco Pilot exam is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to become a loco pilot. It consists of three main stages. The written exam (CBT) includes questions from reasoning, mathematics, science, and general knowledge. Successful candidates are tested for their eyesight, reflexes, and fitness. Selected candidates undergo intensive training for several months at the railway's training institute.

What happens after training?

After completing training, new pilots are first assigned to drive freight trains. This is to ensure that the loco pilots gain a thorough understanding of engine operation and track conditions. Only after a few years of experience and good performance are they assigned to passenger trains, and then, pilots with excellent records are given the opportunity to operate high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat, Tejas, and Rajdhani Express.
