How many kW of solar panels should be installed for a family of 5, and how much subsidy will be available?
PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Troubled by rising electricity bills, a family of 5 is turning to solar. Find out which kW system is suitable and how much subsidy can be obtained from the government.
PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Rising electricity bills are a concern for every household these days. Managing the monthly budget is becoming increasingly difficult, especially for middle-class families. ACs, refrigerators, TVs, washing machines, and kitchen appliances all add up to a rapid meter consumption, directly impacting their pockets. This is why people are now considering generating their own electricity instead of relying solely on the electricity company.
Rooftop solar has become a smart way for people to avoid electricity bills. Once the right system is installed, it provides years of relief. However, many people wonder how many kW of solar system is suitable for a family of 5 and how much subsidy can be obtained. Let us provide you with complete information on this matter.
How many kW of solar is suitable for 5 people?
If the household uses basic appliances like one or two ACs, a refrigerator, a TV, and a washing machine, a 3 kW on-grid solar system is considered the best option. This system can generate approximately 300 to 350 units of electricity per month. This amount is generally sufficient to meet the needs of a family of five.
This requires approximately 300 square feet of clean, level roof space. Regarding cost, a 3 kW system without subsidy can cost approximately ₹1.45 to ₹1.50 lakh. This may seem like a significant amount initially, but the reduction in electricity bills often recovers this cost within a few years.
How much subsidy will be available?
Under the central government's Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, a subsidy of approximately ₹78,000 is available on systems up to 3 kW. A subsidy of ₹30,000 per KW is provided for the first 2 KW and ₹18,000 per KW for the third 1 KW. This means that after receiving the subsidy, the actual cost of a 3 KW system is reduced to approximately ₹67,000 to ₹70,000.
How to apply?
The application process for solar panels is now online. Register on the official portal, select your discom, enter your home details, and have the installation done by an approved vendor. The subsidy is transferred directly to your bank account after the net meter is installed. Keep in mind that even for systems larger than 3 KW, the maximum subsidy will remain at ₹78,000. However, additional subsidies may be available separately in some states.
