How long after a driving license expires can it be renewed? Know the rules..
A driving licence is an important legal document. Driving a vehicle with an expired licence is illegal and can result in a fine (challan). Many people fail to keep track of their driving licence's expiry date. You can apply for a renewal before your licence expires. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, there are clear rules and timelines for renewing or re-obtaining a driving licence once its validity has lapsed.
Renewal without late fees
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, if your driving licence has expired, you are granted a 'grace period' of 30 days from the date of expiry. If you renew your licence within this one month, you are not required to pay any additional penalty or late fees.
Renewal within one year (with late fees)
If you are unable to renew your licence within the 30-day grace period, there is no need to panic. You can still renew it at any time within one year of the expiry date. However, in this case, you will be required to pay a late fee in addition to the standard renewal fee. The advantage is that if you renew within this one year, you do not need to take a driving test again.
Renewal after more than one year: Stricter rules and re-testing
If more than one year has passed since your driving licence expired, the rules become significantly stricter. A licence cannot be renewed directly after one year. In such cases, the applicant is required to undergo a driving test again, in accordance with the regulations of the Transport Department (RTO). Your driving licence will be renewed only after you pass this test. To avoid heavy fines and the need to retake a test, you should renew your license in a timely manner. You can apply online—anywhere from one year before your licence expires to one year after its expiry—by visiting the official 'Parivahan Sewa' (Transport Service) website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
