How did scammers trap a former IPS officer, and how can you protect yourself from such callers?
Former IPS Officer: Scammers gained the former IPS officer's trust and defrauded him of a large sum of money by showing him small initial profits. To avoid such fraudulent calls, stay away from unknown offers, links, and investment schemes.
In today's digital world, most people are online all the time. Along with this, the network of online fraud has also spread rapidly. The situation is such that cyber scams are now targeting not only ordinary people but also experienced officers associated with law and order.
Recently, a similar scam came to light in Punjab involving former IPS officer and retired IG Amar Singh Chahal. A senior officer who used to raise awareness about cybercrime himself fell into the scammers' trap.
Now, many people are wondering how this could have happened to a former IPS officer. The scammers targeted Amar Singh Chahal through online investment and high-return schemes. Initially, small amounts were invested, and profits were shown.
This is the most dangerous trick because it builds trust, and the victim starts feeling secure. Once the trust was established, the fraudsters continuously demanded money, citing reasons like tax processing fees, account unblocking charges, and technical issues.
A new reason was given every time. Gradually, this continued until the total amount defrauded reached approximately 8.10 crore rupees. When Amar Singh Chahal started demanding his money back, the scammers completely cut off contact. This is where the mental pressure began to mount.
The financial loss, the feeling of being cheated, and the helpless situation broke him down. The situation was beyond his control. In his suicide note, he clearly wrote that the mental stress had become unbearable for him. The worry about his family, the fear of social disgrace, and the constant feeling of being cheated became overwhelming.
On Monday, he shot himself at his residence in Patiala. He is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. This incident clearly shows that cyber fraud not only causes financial loss but also has a profound impact on mental health. If someone wants to avoid these types of scams, they should stay away from schemes that promise unusually high returns. Never trust unknown calls, messages, or links. To protect yourself, never share any personal information with anyone over the phone.
