To address this, Android offers several security features designed to safeguard data in the event of theft. These measures have been further strengthened in Android 17, making it difficult for a thief to access data even after getting hold of the phone. How can data be protected after a phone is stolen?

Android 17 has enhanced security features such as “Failed Authentication Lock” and “Identity Check.” On supported devices, the limit for consecutive failed PIN or password attempts has been reduced, and the waiting period between failed attempts has been extended. This aims to thwart individuals attempting to crack the phone lock by rapidly entering various PIN combinations.

Additionally, the “Mark as Lost” feature within Google’s “Find Hub” app offers the option to lock the phone using biometrics alongside the standard PIN or passcode. Even if a thief knows your PIN, activating “Mark as Lost” can restrict access to certain sensitive functions. Furthermore, this feature allows you to hide Quick Settings and block new Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections.

What should you do immediately if your phone is stolen?

The first step after your phone is stolen is to block your SIM card. You can contact your mobile operator’s customer care to suspend the SIM, thereby stopping incoming OTPs, calls, and messages associated with that number. Subsequently, features like ‘Find My Device’ on Android and ‘Find My iPhone’ on iOS can be used to lock the phone or wipe its data. These tools help locate the device, lock it, or erase data if necessary.

Secure UPI and Passwords

It is advisable to temporarily block or suspend banking, UPI, and digital wallet apps if the phone is stolen. Additionally, change your email password from another device first, and then update the passwords for your banking, UPI, shopping, and social media accounts.

Report the Phone and IMEI

Filing an FIR for the stolen phone and providing the IMEI number is also essential. The IMEI number aids in identifying, tracking, or blocking the device. This record can also be useful for insurance claims if required.
