How can one get an affordable loan in villages and small towns, and what should one do if they have no credit history or credit card?

In rural areas and small towns, people often find themselves in sudden need of funds—whether for emergencies, business ventures, or agricultural activities. However, many hesitate to approach banks for loans due to a lack of a CIBIL score, credit history, or credit card. Consequently, they are often forced to turn to moneylenders, falling into a trap of exorbitant interest rates. The good news is that even those living in small villages can access affordable loans.

Even if you have no credit history, you can still leverage the formal banking system to secure a loan at a low interest rate. There are several accessible options for obtaining affordable credit in rural areas and small towns.

If you are involved in the agricultural sector, consider a 'Kisan Credit Card' (KCC).
For those engaged in farming or animal husbandry, the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) is the most affordable and convenient option. While KCCs typically carry an interest rate of 7%, the government provides a 3% subsidy for timely repayments, bringing the effective interest rate down to just 4%. Furthermore, if you combine crop cultivation with activities like dairy farming, goat rearing, or fisheries, you can also access concessional loans under the KCC scheme.

Access immediate funds at low rates through a 'Gold Loan'.
In rural areas, gold is more than just an asset; it serves as a vital financial resource during times of crisis. Since a gold loan is a secured loan, banks do not prioritize your CIBIL score. Gold loans generally offer significantly lower interest rates compared to unsecured personal loans. By pledging your gold ornaments with a bank or an NBFC (Non-Banking Financial Company), you can secure a loan within just a few hours.

Loans against Fixed Deposits (FD) or Recurring Deposits (RD).
If you hold a Fixed Deposit (FD) or a Recurring Deposit (RD) with a post office or a bank, there is no need to liquidate it prematurely. Instead, you can obtain a loan amounting to 80% to 90% of the funds deposited in your FD or RD account. The interest rate on this loan is only 1% to 2% higher than the interest earned on your fixed deposit (FD), making it significantly cheaper than a standard loan.

Loan via a Guarantor
If you do not have a credit score of your own, you can include a family member—such as your father, brother, or spouse—who has a regular income, as a co-applicant. Alternatively, you can apply by having someone with a good credit score act as a guarantor. This reduces the bank's risk and makes it easier to get the loan approved.
