Under Passport Seva 2.0, travelers will now receive a smart passport with a microchip, which is more secure than ever before. Learn about the fees, the unparalleled benefits, and the complete application process for this high-tech passport.
How to Apply for an E-Passport: The Government of India has updated its passport services to meet future needs, making the e-passport mandatory under the Passport Seva 2.0 initiative. This new passport is a smart digital version of the traditional paper passport, designed keeping global security standards in mind. Now, whenever a citizen applies for a new passport or renews their old one, they will be issued a chip-enabled passport equipped with modern technology.
Technological Strength and Enhanced Security
The biggest feature of the e-passport is a small electronic microchip hidden inside its cover. This advanced chip securely stores the traveler's personal information such as digital photos, fingerprints, and other biometric data. From a security perspective, this is revolutionary because tampering with it or creating a counterfeit copy is virtually impossible. This chip not only protects your identity but also makes the immigration process at international airports much faster and smoother.
Cost and Eligibility
The good news is that despite being equipped with state-of-the-art technology, there has been no increase in the e-passport fees. For a standard 36-page passport booklet, you will have to pay only ₹1,500, while the fee for a 60-page booklet for frequent travelers is fixed at ₹2,000. For those opting for the Tatkal (expedited) service, the cost goes up to ₹3,500 and ₹4,000 respectively. Regarding eligibility, any Indian citizen, whether a young child or an elderly person over 75 years of age, can apply for it. Senior citizens are also given special priority during appointments.
Rules for Renewal and Required Documents
If you currently have an old regular passport and it is still valid, you don't need to worry about replacing it immediately. The old passport will be fully functional until its expiry date. You will receive the new chip-enabled e-passport when you reapply after your old passport expires or is lost. The application process requires basic documents such as Aadhaar card, PAN card, and birth certificate. However, it is mandatory to ensure that the applicant does not have any serious criminal record, otherwise, it may hinder the issuance of the passport.
