Heatwave Havoc in Odisha: Early Summer Vacations Announced for All Schools Starting April 27
In view of the escalating heat across the state, the Odisha government has decided to close all government and private schools starting April 27. This decision was taken with the safety and well-being of students in mind.
Amidst continuously rising temperatures and scorching winds in Odisha, the state government has taken a significant step. By declaring summer vacations ahead of schedule, the government has issued an order to close all schools effective April 27, 2026. This decision prioritizes the health and safety of children, aiming to provide them with relief from the intensifying heat. Several regions of the state are currently experiencing conditions characterized by intense sunlight and heatwave-like situations, which are also disrupting daily life for the general public.
School Vacations Effective from April 27
Following the directives of the state government, all government, aided, and private schools in Odisha will be closed starting April 27. Acting upon the recommendation of the Education Department, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved this proposal. Subsequently, the concerned departments have been instructed to implement the order immediately. This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to the lakhs of students and parents associated with these schools.
Decision Driven by Heat and Heatwave Conditions
In several parts of the state, temperatures are consistently being recorded above 40 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures in certain areas could soar up to 45 degrees in the coming days. Given these prevailing conditions, the decision to close schools ahead of schedule was deemed necessary. The administration emphasizes that protecting young children from the intense heat is of paramount importance. The government has clarified that pre-scheduled examinations will proceed as per their original timetable. Furthermore, essential administrative tasks, office procedures, and other government operations will continue as usual.
Vacations Typically Began in May
Typically, summer vacations in the state would commence after the first week of May; however, due to the onset of severe heat as early as April this year, the vacations have been declared ahead of schedule. The sudden rise in temperatures has compelled the government to take this decision. Keeping the safety of children in mind, the state government is also considering the temporary closure of Anganwadi centers. Plans are being formulated to deliver rations and nutritional supplies directly to the doorsteps of needy children. Officials have also been issued instructions to make the necessary preparations in this regard.
