National Health Forum:

Now you do not need to worry about your health insurance claims, because the National Health Claims Platform (NHCX) is likely to be launched in the next two to three months. With this, the claim settlement process will be done in a fast and transparent manner, official sources gave this information on Wednesday. NHCX is a digital health claims forum, developed by the National Health Authority (NHA) to ensure faster processing of health insurance claims. This will standardize the insurance claim processes, as well as ensure transparency, including all insurance companies and other parties.

What was the problem with the claims settlement?

The National Health Authority (NHA) and the Insurance Regulator of India and Development Authority (IRDA) partnered to launch NHCX last year. IRDAI, through a circular in June 2023, had advised all insurers and service providers to include NHCX. Insurance companies have different portals, making it cumbersome and time-consuming for hospitals, patients, and other concerned parties to settle health insurance claims. The source said that NHCX is ready and is likely to be launched in the next two to three months. The claims forum has been developed as a part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

What is NHXE's plan?

Through NHCX, all the insurance companies will be on one stage. It will serve as a common platform for sharing claims-related information between various parties in the health care and health insurance ecosystem.

According to the source, integration with NHCX will make the settlement of health claims possible without any hindrance. Also, efficiency and transparency will increase in the insurance industry. This will benefit policyholders and patients. NHA and IRDAI are conducting meetings and workshops with hospitals and insurance companies for the complete integration of 40-45 health insurance companies with NHCX.

Which companies are involved?

Insurance companies like Aditya Birla Health Insurance, Star Health & Allied Insurance, Bajaj Allianz Insurance Company and HDFC ERGO Insurance, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, The New India Assurance Company, Tata AIG General Insurance Company, Paramount TPA, United India Insurance Company have implemented NHCX integration.

Officials have said that there is a lack of standardization in the current process of exchanging claims. In this, most of the data is exchanged in PDF or ‘manual’. Processes vary significantly between insurers, TPAs, and service providers. This makes the cost of settling each claim higher.
