Health Insurance: Tier-3 cities are driving demand for unlimited health plans. Know the key benefits and why more families are opting in.
Health Insurance: People are increasingly opting for health insurance to cope with rising medical costs. Plans offering "unlimited sum insured" are particularly gaining popularity in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Health Insurance: Along with the rise in illnesses, the cost of medical treatment is also steadily increasing. It is impossible to predict when or where a medical emergency might strike. Bearing hospital expenses is not easy for the average person; years of savings can be wiped out in an instant due to medical treatment costs. This is why more people are turning to health insurance. Notably, while health coverage was once largely limited to major cities, residents of smaller towns are now also choosing health plans. Plans with "unlimited sum insured" have seen rapid growth in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
What is "Unlimited Sum Insured"?
In health insurance, "unlimited sum insured" is a feature where the insurance company automatically recharges your health cover once the initial coverage amount is exhausted. For instance, suppose you have a base cover of ₹5 lakh. If this entire amount is consumed during the treatment of a serious illness, the company adds another ₹5 lakh (or more) to the same policy to cover further treatment.
What are the benefits of "Unlimited Sum Insured"?
The biggest advantage is that if a policyholder requires multiple hospitalizations within a single policy year—exhausting the entire insurance cover—the insured amount becomes available again thanks to this feature.
Additionally, the "unlimited restoration" feature eliminates the need to purchase an exorbitantly expensive plan, as the coverage amount is replenished once the initial limit is reached.
This feature is particularly valuable in cases of critical illness, which may require repeated hospital visits; it ensures you have financial security throughout the process. A key highlight is that policyholders need not worry about the coverage amount running out during treatment, as the sum insured is automatically replenished once exhausted.
Tier-3 cities break records in insurance adoption.
According to data from Policybazaar, the purchase of health insurance policies with 'unlimited sum insured' coverage in Tier-3 cities stood at 41.71% in the 2026-27 financial year. Tier-2 cities also saw an increase in their share compared to the past. Notably, this figure surpasses the share held by Tier-1 cities. Residents of smaller towns are moving beyond basic health policies; instead, they are opting for features like unlimited coverage and restoration benefits to handle serious medical conditions such as heart surgery, cancer, or other major illnesses.
