HDFC Bank has launched 5 new features for the digital rupee; find out how you will benefit..
HDFC Bank Digital Rupee: HDFC Bank, the country's largest private sector bank, has made a significant move regarding the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) digital currency, the 'Digital Rupee' (CBDC). On Wednesday, September 24, the bank launched five impressive new use cases designed to make the Digital Rupee extremely easy and practical to use.
With these new features, customers can now do everything from purchasing food and beverages on flights without an internet connection to converting their credit card reward points into Digital Rupee for daily expenses.
Here is a detailed look at these five new features from HDFC Bank and the benefits they offer to ordinary customers and businesses:
**In-flight payments without internet**
Often, making online payments during a flight is impossible due to the lack of internet connectivity. HDFC Bank has found a solution to this problem. Passengers can now pay for food, beverages, snacks, or seat upgrades simply by tapping their phones on HDFC Bank's merchant POS (Point of Sale) machines. No internet or network connectivity is required for this.
**Credit card reward points converted to 'Digital Rupee'**
Credit card reward points often go underutilized. HDFC Bank customers can now redeem their credit card reward points directly into 'Digital Rupee'. They can use this digital currency for everyday needs, such as dining at restaurants, refueling vehicles, or purchasing clothing and electronic goods.
**Digital Rupee gift vouchers**
The bank will now issue 'Digital Rupee' gift vouchers to customers as part of promotional offers or rewards. These vouchers will be credited directly to the customer's HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallet. Customers can use these funds to make purchases at any store by simply scanning a standard UPI QR code. Programmable Allowances for Companies
Managing employee allowances and reimbursements will become easier for companies. They will be able to transfer allowances for fuel, meals, or travel to employees in the form of Digital Rupee directly via their net-banking platforms. According to the bank, these payments can be 'programmed'; this means employees can spend the funds only within the specific category for which they were allocated (e.g., strictly for fuel or food).
Integration with the BHIM App
To make the Digital Rupee easily accessible to the general public, HDFC Bank has integrated its e-Rupee wallet with the BHIM app. Customers can now conduct transactions using their Digital Rupee wallet directly through the BHIM app.
What is the Digital Rupee (CBDC)?
The Digital Rupee is India's official Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is legal tender—just like the physical currency notes in your hand—but exists in a digital format within your mobile wallet. The RBI launched pilot projects for its retail and wholesale versions in 2022.
What did bank officials say?
Ashish Parthasarathy, Head of Branch Banking and Payments at HDFC Bank, stated, "The Digital Rupee offers the trust associated with sovereign currency, alongside features like programmability, transparency, and enhanced control."
Meanwhile, Rajnish Prabhu, Senior EVP at the bank, noted that these new use cases would completely transform the experience regarding rewards, corporate benefits, and offline payments for everyday customers.
