It has been seen many times that credit cards are issued by banks in the name of customers without their consent. It is wrong for any bank to do so. According to the rules of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), no bank can issue a credit card in the name of customers without obtaining their permission.

What to do if this happens?

If a bank issues a credit card without your consent, then first of all you should not activate it. Let us tell you that your mobile OTP is required to activate the card. Some master directions were issued by the Reserve Bank of India on 7 March 2024 regarding credit cards and debit cards. Under this, the card issuer is required to first obtain the permission of the customer.

If you do not activate the card, the bank will close it after a few days and its information will also be sent to you. In this process, the bank cannot charge you any closing fee. When the customer gets the message of the card being closed, it should be destroyed. The best way for this is to cut your card into several pieces and throw it away so that the magnetic strip and its chip it are destroyed.

Complain to RBI

Even if your card is closed, you should still complain about it. You can complain about it to the bank that issued the card. If the matter is not resolved there, then you can take the complaint to the Reserve Bank of India Ombudsman (RBI Ombudsman).

How to complain to the RBI Ombudsman?

If there is no response from the card issuing bank even for 30 days, then you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman. For this, you will have to go to https://cms.rbi.org.in and from there you can complain.
