Has piped gas reached your area? Surrender your LPG cylinder immediately, or face disconnection.
New Rule (LPG Connection): The central government has introduced major changes to cooking gas regulations. LPG cylinder connections are being cancelled for residents in areas where piped natural gas (PNG) facilities are available. Additionally, restrictions have been imposed on holding multiple connections under a single name.
New Rule (LPG Connection): If your home has a piped natural gas (PNG) connection or if your family holds more than one LPG cylinder connection, this news is crucial for you.
Under the government's new rules, such consumers' LPG connections could be cancelled. Failure to take the necessary steps within the timeframe specified by the ministry could result in the permanent stoppage of cylinder deliveries to your home.
Why was this major decision taken?
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has taken this step to reduce the country's massive fuel import bill. The government's primary objective is to promote the use of piped natural gas (PNG) in urban and developed areas, thereby freeing up LPG cylinders to be diverted to rural and remote regions where gas pipelines have not yet reached.
What are the new rules?
Two major changes have been introduced under the new government order:
No Dual Connection Policy: If a PNG (piped gas) line has reached your home or housing society and is operational, you cannot retain an LPG cylinder. Such consumers must voluntarily surrender their existing cylinder connection.
Restriction on Multiple Connections: If multiple LPG connections are active within the same family or at the same address, the rules require you to surrender the additional connections. Only one gas connection per family will be permitted.
What action will be taken for non-compliance?
The government has issued strict directives to all public and private gas companies (such as Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas). Consumers in areas where PNG infrastructure is already in place are being issued notices and given a specific timeframe to switch. If they fail to switch to PNG within this period, dealers will completely block the booking and supply of LPG cylinder refills.
Who will get relief?
This rule applies only to areas where piped gas lines have already been laid. Villages or towns that do not yet have PNG facilities will continue to receive LPG cylinders as before. Additionally, if installing a pipeline is not feasible for a household due to technical reasons, the resident can continue using LPG by obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the gas company.
