H-1B Visa Case: Trump's decision won't worsen India's situation, here's how to find a solution..

US President Donald Trump is issuing new decrees against India one after another. First, an additional 25% tariff. Now, he has issued a new threat by increasing the fees for H1-B visas. This decision by Trump has increased the problems of IT companies. However, he will not be able to worsen India's situation as much as Trump thinks. NASSCOM, an organization representing the technology industry, says that it expects only a minor impact on the sector.
In fact, Indian and Indian-related companies operating in the US have significantly reduced their reliance on H1B visas and are increasing the recruitment of local people.
According to available data, the number of H1B visas issued to major Indian and Indian-related companies has declined from 14,792 in 2015 to 10,162 in 2024. NASSCOM stated on Monday that the US government's clarification regarding the H-1B visa fee hike will not apply to H-1B visa holders, removing ambiguity regarding eligibility and timeframe. NASSCOM stated that this clarity will alleviate concerns of H-1B holders living outside the US regarding uncertainty. The US government stated that a payment of $100,000 is mandatory with any new H-1B visa application submitted after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 21, 2025. NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Companies) is a non-profit organization representing India's information technology and business process management industry.
The new fee will be effective from 2026
The apex industry body stated that the fee will be effective from 2026, giving companies sufficient time to further improve their skills programs in the US and recruit more employees locally. The Indian information technology (IT) industry breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday when the US government clarified that the new H1B visa application fee of ₹100,000 will apply only to new applicants and will not affect existing visa holders or visa renewals.
How much is the fee?
The H1B visa fee ranges from approximately $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the size of the employer and other expenses. Meanwhile, the US government has stated that all new H1B visa applications submitted after September 21 will be subject to the $100,000 fee recently announced by President Donald Trump.
