The government has taken a tough stance against cyber fraud and launched a major digital crackdown on online scams. In the last six months, this campaign has prevented over ₹1000 crore of public money from falling into the hands of fraudsters. During this period, millions of fake SIM cards have also been deactivated across the country, dealing a major blow to cybercriminals.
According to the latest data shared by the Department of Telecommunications, more than 8.6 million suspicious and fake SIM cards have been blocked so far. The department says this step has been taken to make the rapidly growing digital usage in the country safer. The government believes that as the reach of mobile and internet services expands, the threats of online fraud have also increased, making it crucial to curb them.
The Department of Telecommunications also stated through its official social media platforms that India has entered a strong phase of the digital revolution. The average cost of mobile data in the country is ₹8.27 per GB, which is significantly cheaper than in many developed countries. This affordable internet has led to the rapid expansion of digital services.
Since the launch of 5G services in 2022, the number of 5G users in the country has crossed the 400 million mark. Along with this, the total number of telecom users in India has exceeded 1.23 billion, making India the world's second-largest telecom market.
To curb online fraud, the government has also taken several major steps at the technical level. Strict action has been taken against fake and spoof calls originating from international numbers, resulting in an almost 99 percent reduction in such calls. In addition, thousands of fraud cases are being reported daily through the 'Sanchar Saathi' app and portal, enabling timely action.
Along with digital security, India is also making rapid strides in the field of artificial intelligence. According to the Department of Telecommunications, approximately 13.5 percent of users worldwide who use AI tools like ChatGPT are from India. This figure clearly shows that Indian users are not lagging behind any developed country in adopting new technologies.
Overall, this digital crackdown against online fraud has not only proven effective in preventing financial losses but also demonstrates India's growing digital strength.
