Government will give 2 days leave to spend time with parents, Matri-Pitru Vandana scheme started in this state

Assam Govt Launches ‘Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme’: Employees to Get 2 Days Leave to Spend Time With Parents
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Assam government has rolled out the Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme, under which state government employees will receive two days of special casual leave exclusively to spend time with their parents or in-laws.
In today’s fast-paced life, balancing professional responsibilities and family time has become a challenge. Work stress and packed schedules often leave people with little to no time for their aging parents. Recognizing this issue, the Assam government has introduced a scheme that encourages employees to reconnect with their roots and dedicate quality time to their families.
When the Leave Will Be Available
According to the official notification, state government employees will be able to avail two days of special casual leave on November 14 and 15, 2025 under the Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme. Interestingly, November 16, being a Sunday, can also be clubbed with these days, allowing employees to enjoy a long weekend with their families.
The scheme was originally announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his Independence Day address in 2021. Now, with the formal notification issued, the plan is ready for implementation.
The government has also launched a dedicated portal – matripitrivandana.assam.gov.in – to facilitate the application process.
How to Apply for Leave
Employees interested in availing the benefit must register on the official portal. The process requires providing a valid mobile number, uploading a government-issued ID, and a passport-size photograph.
Once registered, applicants can log in to the portal and click on the “Apply for Leave” option to submit their request. The digital application process is designed to be simple, transparent, and accessible for all government employees across Assam.
A Thoughtful Gesture Towards Family Values
The introduction of the Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme highlights the Assam government’s commitment not only to employee welfare but also to strengthening family values. By officially recognizing the importance of parents and encouraging employees to spend time with them, the scheme sets a positive example for other states in India.
Government officials believe that the initiative will not only reduce work stress but also strengthen emotional bonds within families. Social scientists and welfare experts have also praised the move, saying it reflects an empathetic approach towards work-life balance.

A Unique Step in Employee-Friendly Governance
While many organizations worldwide are focusing on employee wellness, Assam’s initiative is unique because it directly ties leave benefits to family bonding. Instead of just addressing work pressure, it acknowledges the emotional and cultural importance of parents in Indian society.
If successful, experts believe the scheme could inspire other state governments to adopt similar policies, thereby embedding family values within public service frameworks.
The Assam government’s notification stated: “It is with great satisfaction that the Governor of Assam announces that employees of the state government can avail two days of special casual leave under the Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme to spend time with their parents or parents-in-law.”
By giving employees the freedom and official backing to dedicate time to their families, the state is setting an example of inclusive, human-centered governance.
