Government to Introduce ‘Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card’ for Seamless Travel

The central government is planning to roll out a ‘Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card’, which will be valid at all toll booths across the country. Union Road, Transport, and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is advocating for this initiative on a pan-India level, aiming to provide discounts on toll tax, especially benefiting frequent travelers and commercial vehicles.
How Will the Smart Card Work?
The government is gradually transitioning towards the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for toll collection, which will require vehicles to be equipped with a GNSS-based device that automatically deducts toll fees based on road usage. While the full implementation of GNSS may take time, the smart card system will serve as an interim solution, allowing frequent travelers to pay tolls through a monthly pass.
Who Will Benefit?
While officials have not confirmed whether non-pass holders will receive any exemptions, regular commuters and commercial vehicle operators are expected to save significantly with the smart card system.
Impact on Commercial Vehicles
Experts believe this move will be particularly advantageous for commercial transport, which frequently covers long distances. The simplified payment process will reduce time spent at toll booths and lower overall expenses for frequent travelers.
The final decision on implementing the Toll Tax Smart Card is expected soon, and once rolled out, it is likely to provide relief to millions of commuters across India.
