The government often launches several welfare schemes for women and girls, aimed at empowering them financially. One such initiative launched by the West Bengal government is the Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana. Launched on March 8, 2013, this scheme focuses primarily on promoting girls' education and preventing child marriage. It has been an important tool in improving the lives of young girls across the state.
Financial Assistance under Kanyashree Prakalpa
Under this scheme, scholarships are provided to girls studying in secondary and higher secondary schools. Additionally, the scheme provides assistance to girls in sports and vocational programs. The scholarship amount is transferred directly to the bank accounts of eligible girls. Initially, the maximum scholarship amount was ₹500 during the year 2013-14, but now it has been increased to ₹1,000.
The scheme targets unmarried girls aged 13 to 18 years, who should be studying between classes 8 to 12. Initially, the programme was limited to girls from these classes, but in 2017, the eligibility was extended to include postgraduate students as well. Under this initiative, girls who have attained the age of 18 are eligible to receive a one-time grant of ₹25,000.
