Government ambulances in Bihar will be trackable online; the control room will be able to dispatch a vehicle to the location immediately.
The Bihar state government has taken a significant step to ensure a quick, transparent, and effective response during health emergencies. All government-operated ambulances in the state will now be monitored online and equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS). This new technological system will ensure that patients can access an ambulance immediately in the event of road accidents or serious medical conditions—an area that has historically been a source of complaints in Bihar.
**24/7 Monitoring via a Control Room**
Under this new initiative by the Bihar Health Department, all government ambulances are being fitted with GPS devices, with their live locations monitored 24/7 from a central control room. When an emergency call is received, the control room will use specialized software to instantly identify the ambulance closest to the patient. That ambulance will then be dispatched immediately, helping to minimize delays caused by factors such as traffic congestion.
**Plans to Integrate Private Ambulances**
In addition to government-operated vehicles, there are plans to incorporate ambulances from private hospitals into this tracking system. Eventually, all private ambulances will be mapped, and the government will establish fixed fare rates. This will prevent private operators from charging arbitrary, exorbitant fees during emergencies and will also help curb corruption.
This GPS-based online tracking system will not only bring greater transparency to the Health Department’s operations but will also ensure that patients—whether in the capital, Patna, or in rural areas—receive timely access to medical transport and healthcare services.
