Google: While on one hand, big tech companies are laying off employees, Google is giving its employees a year's salary without working. Yes, in fact, one such unique case of Google has come to light. According to reports, some engineers of Google's AI branch DeepMind are being paid salary for a whole year without any work.

What is the whole matter

According to a report by Business Insider, some old employees of DeepMind are still taking salary from the company. However, they are no longer working there. The reason for this is noncompete agreement. Let us tell you that this is a rule in which the employee is prevented from working in any other big company after leaving the company. Especially for a few months that employee cannot work anywhere else.

In DeepMind, such employees have been put on "extended garden leave" i.e. they are not a part of the company, yet they are being paid salary for the whole year without working so that they do not go to any other companies.

What is the reason for the discussion

While on one hand companies like OpenAI, Meta, HP and Microsoft are firing thousands of people, on the other hand, this move of Google points in a different direction. A former employee of DeepMind says that "a year is a very long time in the world of AI", which means that during such a long break they can be left behind in technological progress.
