Income Tax Refund: There's good news for millions of taxpayers across the country. The Income Tax Department has now started transferring refunds to taxpayers' accounts after they've filed their returns. If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) and it has been e-verified, your refund will have been credited to your Permanent Account Number (PAN). The Income Tax Department had given taxpayers until September 16, 2025, to file their income tax returns. Although the deadline was originally September 15, 2025, the deadline was extended by one day due to technical glitches on the portal.
Why was the ITR filing date extended?
The Income Tax Department extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26 by one day. According to a PTI report, the Income Tax Department on Monday extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for this year due to technical glitches that had caused some difficulties in filing returns on the previously set deadline of September 15. The Central Board of Direct Taxes also issued a statement stating, "To facilitate ITR filing, the last date has been extended by one day (September 16, 2025)." This was reportedly due to technical glitches on the ITR e-filing portal due to heavy traffic on Monday due to the deadline.
Moreover, Monday was also the deadline for payment of the second quarterly installment of advance tax for the current financial year, further increasing the pressure on the portal. Furthermore, the Income Tax Department stated that the e-filing portal was in maintenance mode from 12:00 am to 2:30 am on Tuesday to make necessary technical improvements and usability changes. For users who were having trouble accessing the portal on Monday, the department also issued some checklists that could potentially help them.
How many ITRs were filed?
As of Monday, September 15, 2025, more than 73 million income tax returns were filed, an increase from 72.8 million the previous year. For the assessment year 2024-25, 72.8 million ITRs were filed by July 31, 2024. Meanwhile, the number of ITRs filed for the assessment year 2023-2024 was 67.7 million.
What is the refund process?
The refund process begins as soon as the Income Tax Return (ITR) is e-verified. In most cases, the refund is credited to your bank account within four to five weeks of filing the ITR. If you haven't received your refund within this time, you should check a few things. First, check your form to see if you made any mistakes. Additionally, review any notices or information sent by the Income Tax Department and track the refund status on the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal.
Why does it take so long in some cases?
Experts say that as soon as your return is e-verified, the Income Tax Department begins processing it. In most cases, the refund is credited to the taxpayer's bank account within 2 to 5 weeks. Delays in receiving a refund can occur if the TDS data does not match. Income tax refunds are processed quickly. Many taxpayers are receiving their refunds within a week of filing and verification of their ITRs. The condition for this is that the information they entered must be available on the Income Tax Department's portal.
What are the reasons for delays in income tax refunds?
There are many reasons why your income tax refund may be delayed. It's important to note that your bank account must be pre-validated on the Income Tax Department's portal. If the name on your bank account doesn't match your PAN card, this could be a major reason for a delayed refund. Incorrectly entering the IFSC code can also cause delays. Refunds can also be delayed if the account details you provided in your ITR are now closed. Furthermore, if your PAN card isn't linked to your Aadhaar card, you may also experience a delay.
