Gold Jewellery Price: Gold prices remain consistently high. Consequently, purchasing new jewellery has naturally become quite expensive. However, the price varies by gold purity (karat). While 24-karat gold is the most expensive, it is not used to make jewellery; jewellery making typically begins with a maximum purity of 22 karats. Due to rising costs, customer interest is shifting towards lower-karat gold options.

According to Saumya Khurana of Khurana Jewellery House, jewellers are now offering lightweight jewellery pieces that are more affordable. Jewellery made from 18-karat, 14-karat, and even 9-karat gold is entering the market and gaining popularity among consumers.

Let us look at the cost of purchasing 18, 14, and 9-karat gold jewellery. According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), the price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold rose by ₹2,549 on September 3, reaching ₹1.54 lakh. Based on this rate, the cost for 10 grams of 18-karat, 14-karat, and 9-karat jewellery has been calculated.

Gold Content in 18K, 14K, and 9K Jewellery

10 grams of 18-karat jewellery contains 75%—or 7.5 grams—of pure gold. In 14-karat jewellery, this content is 58.5%, or 5.85 grams. Meanwhile, 10 grams of 9-karat jewellery contains 37.5%, or 3.75 grams, of pure gold.

Other metals are mixed into the remaining portion to enhance the jewellery's durability. A lower karat rating indicates a lower gold content, which is why the price is also lower.

Cost of 10 Grams of 18-Karat Jewellery

10 grams of 18-karat jewellery contains 7.5 grams of pure gold. At a rate of ₹1.54 lakh per 10 grams, the cost of this gold content comes to ₹1,15,500.

The remaining 2.5 grams consist of other metals. When the cost of silver and copper is added, the total metal cost of the jewelry rises to ₹1,18,502. After including a 10% making charge and 3% GST, the total price comes to approximately ₹1,34,262.

Cost of 10 grams of 14-carat jewelry

In 14-carat jewelry, the gold content drops to 5.85 grams. Its value is ₹90,090. However, silver and copper are mixed into the remaining 4.15 grams, and the customer must pay for these metals as well.

Adding the cost of these metals brings the total metal cost to ₹95,073. After adding making charges and GST, the price of 10 grams of 14-carat jewelry comes to approximately ₹1,07,718—resulting in a saving of about ₹26,500 compared to 18-carat jewelry.

Cost of 10 grams of 9-carat jewelry

9-carat jewelry contains only 3.75 grams of pure gold. At current rates, the value of this gold is ₹57,750. The remaining 6.25 grams consist of other metals. Including the cost of silver and copper brings the total metal cost to ₹65,254.

Subsequently, a making charge of ₹6,525 and 3% GST are added. Thus, 10 grams of 9-carat jewelry is produced at a cost of approximately ₹73,933—meaning the cost is about ₹60,000 lower than that of 18-carat jewelry. A Quick Breakdown of Costs for 10g of Jewellery

The Rising Trend of 9-Carat Jewellery

The trend of 9-carat jewellery is gaining momentum in the market. Young customers, in particular, are showing interest in lightweight pieces suitable for daily wear. 14-carat and 18-carat jewellery are also widely used in designs featuring diamonds and other gemstones.

However, 22-carat gold remains the most sought-after choice for traditional wedding jewellery in India. Yet, amidst record-high gold prices, lower-carat jewellery is emerging as an affordable alternative for consumers.
