An important update has emerged for those planning to buy gold jewelry ahead of the festive and wedding seasons. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made a significant change to the hallmarking fees for gold jewelry. Jewelers will now have to pay ₹75 instead of ₹45 for hallmarking a single gold item. However, this does not necessarily mean that customers will have to pay an extra ₹30 on every piece of jewelry.

How much has the gold hallmarking fee changed?

Previously, the hallmarking charge for a single gold item was ₹45. It has now been raised to ₹75 per item, marking an increase of ₹30 per gold item. Additionally, a minimum fee of ₹200 has been set for each consignment. However, there has been no change in the hallmarking fee for silver jewelry; the fee remains ₹35 per silver item, with a minimum charge of ₹150 per consignment.

Will customers have to pay an extra ₹30 for every piece of jewelry?

It is not necessarily the case that customers will have to pay an additional ₹30 directly on every piece of jewelry due to the fee hike. This is because the ₹75 hallmarking fee is paid by jewelers to the recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC). Significantly, these rules do not mandate charging the customer an additional ₹75.

However, a jeweler may choose to absorb this extra cost themselves or incorporate it into the total price of the jewelry. Therefore, it would be incorrect to claim that the price of every gold ornament will rise by ₹30 simply because the hallmarking fee has increased.

The purpose of the hallmark is to assure customers of the purity of the precious metal used in gold and silver items. Thus, when purchasing gold or silver jewelry, do not rely solely on the shopkeeper's word; make sure to check for the hallmark.

Look for the BIS standard mark on the jewelry.
Check the gold purity or fineness number.
Look for the 6-digit HUID number.
