In the future, artificial intelligence (AI) may find cures for diseases and solve the climate crisis, but for now, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has his eyes set on a more practical problem: reducing the burden on email inboxes. In his keynote during the SXSW festival held in London, Hassabis said that his team is working on an advanced AI-powered email system, which aims to eliminate the everyday hassles associated with digital correspondence.

“I want to get rid of my email”

Hassabis said, “I want the next-generation email system. I am ready to spend thousands of dollars every month to get rid of my email.” This system will automatically manage common messages, respond in the user's style, and decide which emails need immediate attention. It will work like a digital personal assistant.

AI will be able to respond to your style.

According to Hassabis, this tool will be able to recognize those simple emails and respond in the user's language and tone. It will also be able to make some easy decisions at its level. He said, "I am very excited about making AI a universal assistant that understands you better, gives you better suggestions, and relieves you from everyday tasks." Hassabis also said that AI can also help in protecting against attention-grabbing algorithms created by tech companies. "We can put AI in the service of the individual so that it can protect our time and attention," he added.

Acceleration towards AGI

Hassabis also discussed artificial general intelligence (AGI). Systems that can think about various tasks like humans. He previously thought that this research would be done mainly by universities, but due to the rapid commercial progress of AI, big companies started investing in it much earlier.

Given the potential impacts of AGI, Hassabis appealed to the US and China to cooperate on global standards and security protocols. He said, "I hope that at least at the scientific and security level, we can find a common path because it will affect the whole of humanity."

AGI may come in 5 to 10 years
Hassabis believes that AGI may come in the next 5 to 10 years and its impact will be similar to the industrial revolution. He appealed to economists and social scientists to consider how to distribute the prosperity resulting from AI equally. “If we reach a state of economic prosperity and abundance of resources, can we ensure that it is distributed equally?” he asked.
