Ghibli: Ghibli trend can become a problem for you, if you have also made a photo then definitely read this warning..

If you're not completely cut off from the social media and pop culture world of the internet, you've probably heard of OpenAI's viral Ghibli trend and maybe even participated in it. Over the past few weeks, millions of people have had their photos transformed into Studio Ghibli style with the help of OpenAI's AI chatbot. The trend has gone viral rapidly, and now experts are warning about the privacy and data security risks hidden behind it.
How did the Ghibli trend start?
In the last week of March this year, OpenAI launched an image generation feature in ChatGPT, which was equipped with the new capabilities of the GPT-4o model. Initially, this feature was available only to paid users and then it was rolled out to free users as well. The special thing about this was that now users could enter their photos as input and see them in an artistic form like Ghibli films.
A post by software engineer Grant Slaton brought this trend to the height of popularity, in which he transformed his family's photo into Ghibli-style. The post has garnered over 52 million views. A large number of common users, brands, and even the Indian government's MyGovIndia account joined the trend. Celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan also shared their Ghibli-style pictures on social media.
Privacy and data security risks
This all sounds fun, but serious privacy concerns are lurking behind it. OpenAI clearly states on its support page that it uses content uploaded by users (such as text, images, files, etc.) to train its AI models.
Although users have an opt-out option, this information is not disclosed. Most people do not read the terms and give their personal information to OpenAI without knowing.
According to OpenAI's website, unless the user manually deletes the chat, the data remains safe on the company's servers and even after deleting, it may take up to 30 days to be completely removed. During this time, the company can use this data for model training (this does not apply to Teams, Enterprise, or Education plans).
