Germany Visa Interview: When it comes to studying abroad, Germany has become one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students. Notably, in 2024, over 49,000 Indian students were studying at German universities, and this number is steadily increasing year by year. A major reason for this is that tuition fees at German public universities are virtually non-existent. Additionally, the standard of education is high, and there are excellent job prospects after graduation. However, obtaining a student visa is a crucial first step to studying in Germany.
What is the complete visa application process?
To obtain a German student visa, you need to prepare certain essential documents. First, you must have an admission letter from a German university. An APS certificate—which verifies your Indian academic credentials—is also mandatory for all Indian applicants (a requirement since 2022). Other necessary items include health insurance, a passport, language proficiency certificates (such as IELTS, TOEFL, or TestDaF), and a cover letter outlining your study plan.
As of January 2025, Germany has moved the entire visa application process online. Applications must now be submitted via the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de); you need to create an account on this portal and upload all documents online. Officials review your documents online first, after which you receive a link to book an appointment at a VFS center. The visa fee is approximately 75 Euros (around ₹7,300). Processing the visa can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, so it is advisable to apply at least 3–4 months before your course begins.
What questions are asked during the interview? In addition to registration and fee payment, appearing for an interview is mandatory. The visa interview takes place at the German Embassy and typically lasts between 10 and 15 minutes. During this process, the visa officer aims to verify the genuineness of your intention to study. Consequently, many applicants wonder what questions will be asked.
Common questions include:
- Why did you choose Germany for your studies? You should answer this by highlighting the quality of German education and its relevance to your career goals.
- What is your course of study, and why did you choose this specific university?
- How will you fund your education? Be prepared to discuss the 'blocked account' and family financial support.
- What are your plans after completing your studies—will you return to India or stay in Germany?
- Where will you stay in Germany? Have details ready regarding student accommodation, rental housing, etc.
- How does your previous academic background relate to the course you intend to pursue?
- Remember to always tell the truth during the interview, remain confident, and provide clear, direct answers. Avoid giving rehearsed or rote responses.
