The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world's largest philanthropic organizations, is now entering its final phase. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has initiated the process of gradually winding down the foundation. This decision was made last year, to completely close the organization by 2045.

Record $9 Billion Budget for 2026
However, the foundation has approved a record $9 billion budget for 2026, which will be its highest annual expenditure to date. This increased budget aims to address growing challenges in areas such as global health, poverty alleviation, and education, especially at a time when international aid funding is under pressure in many countries.

According to the foundation, it will spend approximately $200 billion during its remaining lifespan. The focus in the coming years will be on maximizing impact while simultaneously preparing for the orderly closure of the foundation.

Job Cuts and Spending Controls
Along with increased program spending, the foundation will also control its operational expenses and staffing. The plan is to reduce approximately 500 positions over the next five years. The goal is to limit annual operating expenses to $1.25 billion, or about 14 percent of the total budget.

Currently, the foundation employs more than 2,300 people. Management says the reductions will be achieved gradually through retirements, resignations, and the elimination of select positions, rather than through sudden layoffs. Staffing and expenses will be reviewed annually.

Areas of Focus
Even as the organization winds down, its key programs will continue. These include projects related to maternal and child health, vaccine development, infectious disease prevention, and education. In addition, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is being promoted, particularly in the public sector and health projects. The foundation is strengthening its presence in regions like Africa and India, where it is promoting local leadership and initiatives to combat diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis.

A clear roadmap to 2045
The foundation's leadership says it has approximately two decades left to operate and will strive to deliver its biggest and most impactful results during this period. With a target deadline of 2045, the Gates Foundation is now pursuing a strategy of accelerated spending and a clear exit plan.
