A message is going viral on social media and WhatsApp these days, in which it is being claimed, citing the RBI, that the Reserve Bank of India has instructed to stop withdrawing 500-rupee notes from ATMs. PBI has termed this claim as completely fake and misleading in its fact check.

PIB Fact Check revealed the truth of the viral claim on the social media platform X. PIB refuted this claim and termed it completely fake. According to PIB Fact Check, the RBI has not issued any such instruction. 500-rupee notes will remain completely valid as legal currency. PIB clarified that a message is spreading rapidly on various social media platforms, including WhatsApp, regarding the 500-rupee note, which is a blatant lie.

What is the claim in the message?
The viral message on social media claims that the RBI has instructed banks to stop withdrawing 500-rupee notes from ATMs by September 2025, which is completely wrong. Also, in the message going viral on social media platforms, quoting RBI, it was also claimed that by March 2026, 75 percent of ATMs and after that 90 percent of ATMs will distribute only 200 and 100 rupee notes. Also, people are being advised to spend the 500-rupee note as soon as possible.
