From LPG and railway tickets to credit cards... major changes have come into effect today that will directly impact your pocket..
Today is August 1, 2026. With the start of the new month, several significant changes have come into effect, impacting everything from the common man's household budget to financial transactions. If you plan to refill your gas cylinder, travel by train, or use your credit card today, you need to be aware of certain new developments. New rules regarding LPG prices, the railway's 'Tatkal' booking system, CKYC 2.0, credit card charges, and Income Tax Return (ITR) filing have come into force today. Ignoring these changes could lead to unnecessary financial loss. Let us look at these new rules one by one to understand how they will directly affect your finances.
**Changes in Gas Cylinder Prices**
State-owned oil companies review gas cylinder prices on the first day of every month. As part of this process, new rates for domestic and commercial LPG cylinders have come into effect from August 1. On August 1, the price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder was reduced by more than ₹200. In Kolkata, the price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has been cut by ₹209, while in Delhi, it has been reduced by ₹202. Following this reduction, the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder will now be available in Delhi for ₹2,728.
These new prices have come into effect today. However, there has been no change in the price of the 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder used in households. Commercial gas cylinders had seen a price hike just last month. Meanwhile, the system of daily price revisions for petrol and diesel remains unchanged.
**Penalty for Delayed Tax Returns and Revised Credit Card Rules**
For salaried taxpayers, the deadline for filing non-audited Income Tax Returns (ITR) was set for July 31, 2026. That deadline has now passed. Individuals filing their returns using ITR-1 or ITR-2 forms will now face hefty late fees. This penalty will be determined based on your total taxable income. Therefore, if you have not yet filed your return, it is advisable to do so immediately to avoid this additional financial burden.
Meanwhile, several major banks have tightened their credit card regulations starting today. Changes have been made to rules regarding everything from reward points and late payment charges to processing fees. Cardholders should carefully review their bank's new terms and conditions to avoid any unexpected charges when paying their bills.
**New Token System for Tatkal Tickets and CKYC 2.0 Implementation**
The Railways has taken a welcome step for passengers planning last-minute train journeys. Starting today, West Central Railway has introduced a token system for Tatkal tickets at station reservation counters. Passengers will no longer need to stand in long queues; instead, they will receive a token from the counter, and tickets will be issued based on the token sequence. This will make the entire booking process more organized.
Additionally, Central KYC (CKYC) 2.0 is being implemented in a phased manner to enhance the security of the banking system. You will no longer need to repeatedly submit KYC documents to banks or insurance companies. The new system will make the verification process faster, more secure, and more transparent.
