Freedom from Rote Learning: New Textbooks and Revised Curriculum to be Introduced in Schools Starting 2026-27
The method of instruction in the country’s schools is set to undergo a transformation. The NCERT has taken a major decision regarding new textbooks and the curriculum, which will come into effect from the 2026–27 academic session.
If you, or a child in your household, are currently attending school, this news is of great importance to you. The NCERT has decided to implement significant changes in school education. These changes are being introduced in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The objective is to steer children away from a purely rote-learning-based approach and instead provide them with an education grounded in conceptual understanding and skill development.
The NCERT has already prepared new textbooks for students in Classes 1 through 8. A welcome feature is that these textbooks will now be available in both print and digital formats, thereby making the learning process even more accessible and convenient for students.
These new textbooks have been designed in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. While the focus in education previously leaned heavily on rote memorization, the emphasis will now shift toward fostering conceptual understanding and critical thinking among students. The textbooks will now feature topics and activities designed to connect classroom learning with children’s everyday lives. Consequently, students will no longer perceive their studies as a burden; instead, they will be able to learn in an engaging and enjoyable manner.
New Curriculum for Class 9 Students Starting 2026-27
A significant change is also in store for students in Class 9. A new curriculum is set to be implemented starting from the 2026–27 academic session. A draft of this curriculum has already been released, and suggestions are currently being solicited from teachers, subject experts, and the general public. The benefit of this consultative process is that all pertinent suggestions can be incorporated before the curriculum is finalized. This ensures that the upcoming curriculum will be superior and more relevant than its predecessors. Teachers have also been instructed to reinforce the foundational learning of their students to ensure they face no difficulties in grasping the new curriculum.
No Immediate Changes for Class 10 and 11 Students
As for students in Classes 10 and 11, there is currently no need for them to be concerned about any impending changes to their curriculum. In the 2026-27 academic year, students in these grades will continue to study using the existing textbooks. However, the NCERT has confirmed that new textbooks will indeed be introduced for these classes; these new editions, however, will come into effect starting from the 2027-28 session.
These Changes Will Be Implemented Gradually
Rather than overhauling everything at once, the NCERT will implement these changes in a phased manner. This means that modifications will be introduced incrementally each year, with the plan to have the entirely new system fully operational by 2028. This approach will provide schools and teachers with adequate time to thoroughly understand the new methodology, thereby ensuring a smooth transition for the students as well.
The Approach to Learning Will Now Be Fundamentally Different
Following these new reforms, the entire approach to learning is set to undergo a complete transformation. Students will no longer be required to merely memorize textbooks; instead, they will be expected to develop a conceptual understanding of the subject matter. Greater emphasis will be placed on practical application, and efforts will be directed toward enhancing students’ critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to cultivate the habit of asking questions and seeking clarity. Consequently, students will be prepared not merely to pass examinations, but to face the challenges of real life.
