Free Travel on Ganga Expressway Ends Today: Find Out How Much Toll Will Now Apply to Each Vehicle Type..
Ganga Expressway: On April 29, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) inaugurated the Ganga Expressway, which ranks among the country's longest expressways. Since its commencement, the journey from Meerut to Prayagraj has become significantly easier and faster. While covering this distance previously took 10 to 12 hours, travelers can now reach Prayagraj in just 5 to 6 hours. Although commuters were exempted from paying tolls for the initial 15 days following the expressway's inauguration, toll collection is now set to begin today, May 14. It is worth noting that toll collection on the Ganga Expressway will commence at midnight tonight, May 14. In light of this, let us explore how much toll travelers using this expressway will be required to pay. We will also look at the methods available for making toll payments.
**Toll Based on Distance Traveled**
A 'Closed Toll System' has been implemented on the Ganga Expressway. This implies that the toll payable will be calculated based on the actual distance covered by the vehicle. Toll payments will be processed exclusively via FASTag, ensuring that vehicles can pass through seamlessly without having to stop.
**Toll Rates for Different Vehicles**
According to the rates released by UPIDA, the toll charges for various categories of vehicles are as follows:
For light vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, the toll has been fixed at ₹2.55 per kilometer.
For two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and tractors, the toll is ₹1.28 per kilometer.
Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and mini-buses will be required to pay a toll of ₹4.05 per kilometer.
For heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks, the rate has been set at ₹8.20 per kilometer.
For large multi-axle vehicles and heavy machinery carriers, the toll is ₹12.60 per kilometer.
Meanwhile, for vehicles with 7 or more axles, the rate has been fixed at ₹16.10 per kilometer.
Consequently, car drivers undertaking the full journey from Meerut to Prayagraj will be required to pay a total toll of approximately ₹1,515. Separately, small commercial vehicles will be required to pay a toll of approximately ₹2,405, while buses and trucks will face a toll of up to approximately ₹4,840.
UPIDA states that these toll rates have been established to cover the maintenance and upkeep of the expressway, as well as to provide enhanced amenities; furthermore, these rates are subject to revision in the future.
**The Expressway Connects 12 Districts**
Spanning approximately 594 kilometers, this expressway begins at Bijoli village in Meerut and extends all the way to Judapur Dandu in Prayagraj. It traverses through 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. Currently, the expressway witnesses a daily traffic volume of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles. To ensure a superior and faster travel experience for commuters, the route has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
**Surveillance via AI Cameras**
AI-powered cameras have been installed along the expressway to facilitate the continuous monitoring of every vehicle. The maximum speed limit for vehicles on this route has been set at 120 kilometers per hour. Violators of these regulations may face fines of up to ₹20,000.
