Online Scam: Since the shift to digital transactions, scammers have become increasingly emboldened. Many people fall victim to fraud involving UPI or online transactions. In the heat of the moment, it can be confusing to know what to do, yet this is precisely when vigilance is most critical—ensuring there is at least a hope of recovering your money if you have been targeted by a major scam.
Call the Helpline
If you encounter such fraud or a scam, do not panic; instead, call the National Cyber Helpline immediately. Dial 1930 to report the incident so that authorities and banks can take swift action. The CFCFRMS (Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System) will assist you, enabling banks and financial institutions to block the transfer of funds.
How to File a Complaint?
Do not waste any time; call 1930 as soon as possible. When calling, provide the transaction details to the National Cyber Crime Helpline executive. The operator will ask for basic information such as your name and mobile number, the amount deducted, the date and time of the transaction, your bank account and UPI ID, the transaction ID, and the UTR number. You should also provide the UPI ID of the recipient's bank account (if available) and any other information that could help trace the scammer.
You can register your complaint by following these simple steps. Once registered, you will receive a complaint number via phone, which you should keep safe for future reference.
Is there anything else you can do? Additionally, you can file an online complaint. This is a formal complaint that can be lodged via the National Cyber Crime portal; here, too, you will need to provide all information related to the scam and fill in the details thoroughly. You can also contact your bank; if the transaction has not yet been processed, they may be able to halt it. Alternatively, the bank might be able to assist you by contacting the account holder who received the funds.
