The ‘Palace on Wheels’ is regarded as India’s first luxury heritage train. It was inaugurated on January 26, 1982, and since then, it has traditionally operated only between September and April each year. Operations were typically suspended during the intense heat of May and June. However, according to railway officials, there has been an overwhelming surge in demand for the train this time around. Consequently—for the very first time—a decision has been taken to operate it during the month of May. The Railways believes that this move will send a significant message to the Rajasthan tourism sector: that the demand for luxury tourism is now on the rise even during the summer season.

Why is the ‘Palace on Wheels’ considered special?
The ‘Palace on Wheels’ is not merely a train; it is considered an experience akin to traveling within a moving royal palace. Passengers on board are treated to regal grandeur, luxurious cabins, exquisite dining, and amenities such as a spa. Several of the train's coaches are named after the erstwhile princely states of Rajasthan—including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer. The interior décor has been meticulously designed to reflect Rajputana culture and royal heritage. It is for this very reason that the train has long remained immensely popular among international tourists.

A Six-Day Royal Journey Commencing from Delhi
According to the Railways, this special journey will take place from May 20 to May 25. The train will depart from Delhi’s Safdarjung Station and cover a total distance of approximately 2,610 kilometers. Along its route, it will pass through Durgapura, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and several other historic cities. This luxury train is being operated under Indian Railways’ Bharat Gaurav Train Policy.’ The train has been assigned the number 00290. During this six-day journey, passengers will enjoy a magnificent experience of Rajasthan’s vibrant culture, majestic forts, grand palaces, and the breathtaking beauty of its deserts.

Royal Amenities Await Onboard
The ‘Palace on Wheels’ comprises a total of 22 coaches. These include a host of modern amenities such as super deluxe saloons, a restaurant-cum-bar, a kitchen, staff coaches, and a spa car. The ambiance inside the train feels akin to that of a five-star hotel. Passengers are served a selection of international delicacies alongside traditional Rajasthani cuisine. Furthermore, every coach features magnificent interiors, comfortable bedding, and modern conveniences. This is precisely why it is counted among the most magnificent luxury trains in the world.

**Rising Demand for Luxury Tourism, Even During Summer**
Railway officials state that, on this occasion, a major public sector bank has booked the entire train. This underscores the rapid growth of luxury and experience-based tourism in India. According to experts, the domestic tourism sector remains robust even amidst global economic uncertainties. In states like Rajasthan, people are now demonstrating an interest in traveling throughout the year, rather than limiting their trips solely to the winter season. In this context, the operation of the ‘Palace on Wheels’ during May is being viewed as a harbinger of new opportunities for the tourism industry. Should the response from passengers prove positive in the coming times, the Railways may take further significant decisions regarding the operation of luxury trains during the summer season as well.
