According to BSES, electricity meters should always be installed outside the house. Installing them near the entry gate or on staircases can be dangerous. Also, do not park any vehicle near the meter or store any flammable materials there.

The risk of electrical accidents increases during the winter season. Increased use of room heaters, geysers, and other electronic devices often leads to incidents of fire and electric shock. Considering this, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited has issued an advisory on fire safety related to electricity. It emphasizes the correct placement of meters, proper wiring, safe use of heaters, and necessary precautions at home. So, let's tell you about the safety rules you should know regarding meters, wiring, and heaters if there is a risk of electrical hazards in your home.

Take precautions with meters and wiring

According to BSES, electricity meters should always be installed outside the house. Installing them near the entry gate or on staircases can be dangerous. Also, do not park any vehicle near the meter, and absolutely do not store any flammable materials there. Furthermore, it is essential to install an ELCB or RCCB after the meter to prevent electric shocks and accidents. Loose connections, frayed wires, or wires without plugs can be a major cause of fire. Therefore, such wiring should be replaced immediately.

Avoid overloading, use appliances correctly

Putting too much load on old or weak wiring can be dangerous. Do not overload extension boards and sockets. Do not leave geysers, room heaters, motors, or other electrical appliances running unnecessarily or for extended periods. Always check that all appliances are switched off before going to sleep or leaving the house, as overheating increases the risk of fire. In addition, BSES advises that ACs, room heaters, and other large appliances should be serviced regularly. This reduces the chances of short circuits and sparking. Also, avoid overcharging electric vehicles, as this increases the risk of fire. Exercise caution with gas and flammable materials.

Before going to sleep at night or leaving the house, it is essential to turn off the gas cylinder or pipeline regulator. If you suspect a gas leak, immediately inform the gas agency. Do not store large quantities of flammable materials such as oil, chemicals, gas, and paper in your home, and keep them away from electrical switches and wiring points.  Furthermore, house wiring should always be done with ISI-certified and standard-rated wires. Use only electrical appliances with the ISI mark. BSES states that under the Safety Rules 2023, it is mandatory to have your house wiring inspected by an authorized electrician every year before the summer season.
