Flight Ticket Price Hike: Airlines deal a blow ahead of Chhath and Diwali; fuel surcharge raised by up to ₹10,000..
The prices of several commodities rose in October, including Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). Consequently, airlines are now adjusting their ticket prices. In line with this, IndiGo has increased its fuel surcharge due to the hike in ATF prices. Let us find out how much more expensive air travel will be for you during the Diwali and Chhath festival period.
**Hike in ATF Prices**
It is worth noting that domestic ATF prices have increased by approximately 13.2% (₹16 per liter). Following this, prices have risen from ₹121 to around ₹137 per liter. This marks the third consecutive month that jet fuel prices have increased; prior to this, there were hikes of ₹5 per liter in August and ₹6.28 per liter in September.
**New Fuel Charge for Domestic Flights**
The airline has increased the fuel surcharge for domestic flights based on distance. Charges have been raised by approximately ₹100 for distances up to 500 km, while for distances exceeding 2,000 km, the increase is up to ₹1,300.
**Domestic Route (Distance)** | **Old Fuel Charge** | **New Fuel Charge**
0-500 km | ₹275 | ₹375
501-1,000 km | ₹400 | ₹600
1,001-1,500 km | ₹600 | ₹900
1,501-2,000 km | ₹800 | ₹1,150
Above 2,000 km | ₹950 | ₹1,300
**What will be the charge for international flights?**
The airline has also increased the fuel surcharge for international flights based on distance. SAARC countries (up to 500 km): ₹1,000
Long SAARC routes: ₹3,000
Southeast Asia, GCC, and the Middle East: ₹5,500
North and East Asia: ₹5,500
Africa: ₹6,000
Europe: ₹10,000
How will this affect passengers?
The airline states that ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) costs have reached a decade-high due to rising fuel prices. The company notes that fuel expenses constitute a significant portion of the airline's total operating costs. Clarifying its position, IndiGo stated that while a steeper hike was required to fully offset the increased fuel costs, it opted for a balanced and limited increase to minimize the financial impact on passengers.
