Generally, the rule stipulates one meter per house. However, under specific conditions, you can have a separate meter installed, provided it complies with the regulations.

**When can you get a separate meter installed?**
You can get a separate meter installed if you have a separate registration (deed) for your flat. In other words, while the standard rule is one meter per house, you can legally obtain a second meter if the property is recognized as a separate dwelling unit.

**When can two meters be installed in one house?**
According to the rules, if a family has split and separate households are residing within the same property, you can apply for a separate meter. You can obtain your own electricity connection when you separate from a joint family; however, the electricity department verifies the situation before granting approval.

For a standard home electricity connection, you can apply for a single-phase meter with a capacity ranging from 1 kW to 4 kW. If your household load exceeds 4 kW, you are required to get a three-phase connection, which entails additional charges.

**Getting a meter installed based on a rent agreement**
You can also get a separate electric meter installed if you have a rent agreement. However, a key condition is that the rent agreement must not be older than three months. You will also need to submit identity proof documents along with the agreement.
