Microsoft has announced that it is removing its Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), one of the most iconic Windows error messages of all time. The tech company has said that it is replacing the famous Blue Screen of Death with a new, simpler user interface that is easier to read and better aligns with the design principles of Windows 11.

The Blue Screen of Death, also known as BSOD, has been around for nearly 40 years and will soon be replaced by a plain-looking black screen of death with no emojis and QR codes. Since Windows 1.0, the Blue Screen of Death has undergone several visual and other changes, but this is the first time the company is making such a major design change to the Windows error page.

In April this year, Microsoft had indicated that it was testing a new look of its famous Blue Screen of Death. Now this new and easy Black Screen of Death comes with an error message, “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart”, which looks exactly like what you see during a Windows update. The technology giant has shifted the stop code and the name of the system driver that caused the crash to the bottom of the screen.

Why did Microsoft take this decision?

The new Black Screen of Death will come with a Windows update later this summer. The company has taken this decision, part of Microsoft's Windows Resiliency Initiative, after the CrowdStrike incident last year. At that time security software crashed more than 8 million Windows PCs with a Blue Screen of Death due to a buggy software update.
