FASTag: 12-minute journey now takes 40 seconds; how much has toll collection increased?

National Highway: There is good news for highway travelers. Thanks to FASTag, vehicles now face shorter wait times at toll plazas compared to the past. Additionally, an increase in toll collection has been recorded.

National Highway Toll Collection: If you frequently travel on highways, you would agree that long queues at toll plazas used to waste a significant amount of your time; however, things have changed considerably. You no longer have to stop at toll plazas for as long as before; the implementation of the digital tolling system has reduced waiting times for vehicles, thereby saving a lot of time.

According to the government, it previously took vehicles 12.23 minutes to cross a toll point, but following the implementation of FAFASTag and the digital tolling system, this time has dropped to approximately 40 seconds. In other words, vehicles no longer face lengthy waits at toll plazas, resulting in significant time savings.

How was the time at toll plazas reduced?

According to the government, over 98 percent of toll payments on national highways are now made via FASTag, which contributes to the reduced time. Furthermore, a barrier-free tolling system utilizing ANPR and RFID technologies has been introduced at five toll plazas across the country, requiring minimal stops for vehicles. These factors combined have led to shorter waiting times for vehicles at toll plazas.

How much has toll collection increased?

According to information provided by the government in Parliament, toll collection on national highways stood at ₹33,928.66 crore in the 2021-22 financial year. This figure rose to ₹70,278.18 crore in 2025-26. Essentially, toll collection more than doubled over these five years. An analysis of toll collections over these five years shows an increase each year:
