The Karnataka government has increased fares for BMTC buses by 35% and for buses operated by three other transport corporations by 22%. The new rates will come into effect tonight, meaning passengers may have to pay up to ₹20 more.

If you travel by government buses in Karnataka, you will now have to pay higher fares than before. Bus fares have been raised against the backdrop of soaring diesel prices in the state. The state government has increased fares for buses operated by various transport corporations, including the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The new rates will take effect tonight. This will impact everything from city buses in Bengaluru to AC buses heading to the airport, as well as KSRTC bus services.

According to Karnataka Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh, fares for BMTC buses have been increased by approximately 35%, while fares for buses under the state’s three other transport corporations have been raised by about 22%. For some services, the maximum fare has increased by up to ₹20. It is, therefore, essential to be aware of the new fares before you head out, so you aren't caught off guard by extra costs during your journey. Let’s take a look at the new fares for these buses.

How much have fares increased for Bengaluru buses?

Under the new fare structure, the maximum fare for 'Vayu Vajra' buses—which run to the Bengaluru airport—has been raised from ₹405 to ₹425, meaning passengers will now have to pay ₹20 more.

Meanwhile, the maximum fare for 'Vajra' AC buses has increased from ₹75 to ₹90—an upward revision of ₹15. For standard BMTC city buses, the maximum fare has been raised from ₹35 to ₹45. Additionally, the minimum fare for traveling on city buses in Bengaluru has increased from ₹6 to ₹10.

Higher fares for KSRTC buses as well

This fare hike is not limited to Bengaluru’s city buses; fares for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses have also been raised. In light of the rise in diesel prices, fares for these buses have been increased by up to ₹9.

Impact on passengers' pockets

A large number of people in Karnataka rely on government buses for their daily commute. Consequently, this change will impose an additional financial burden on those who travel daily using these services. Therefore, be sure to check the new fare rates before setting out on your journey.
