Fraudsters are now taking advantage of the popularity of UPI by creating fake versions of these apps. These fake apps are designed to look like real apps, targeting small merchants, shopkeepers, and everyday users.

How the scam works

Fraudsters use fake UPI apps to scan a merchant's QR code and initiate payment. They then display a fake screenshot and sound notification mimicking the interface of the real app, creating a convincing illusion of transaction completion.

Identifying and avoiding fraud

Verify payments: Always verify the transaction against your actual UPI app or bank statement.

Be aware: Be cautious about installing apps from unfamiliar sources. Download UPI apps only from official app stores.

Report fraud: If you fall victim to such fraud, report it immediately. Call the helpline 1930 or complain to the Government of India's cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in).
