Fake LPG Booking Scams Cause Growing Distress; Fake Links Could Steal Your Sensitive Data—Here’s How to Stay Safe
Amidst the ongoing LPG supply crisis in the country, scammers have devised a new modus operandi to defraud people through fake LPG booking scams. Read on to understand what this entails.
Fake LPG Booking Links: The crisis surrounding the shortage of LPG does not appear to be subsiding anytime soon. The geopolitical tensions involving Israel, the US, and Iran are having repercussions in India, resulting in a persistent LPG supply crisis across the nation. Now, while the public grapples with concerns regarding supply shortages and rising prices, another problem is gradually taking root: the LPG booking scam.
According to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, scammers are currently seeking to capitalize on the panic surrounding LPG availability by specifically targeting LPG users. By exploiting this situation, they use fake LPG booking links to harvest your personal information—and subsequently steal your financial details—thereby putting the funds in your bank account at grave risk.
How It Works:
These fraudulent links are circulated to customers via SMS, WhatsApp, or social media advertisements, often under the guise of facilitating urgent LPG bookings. Driven by their pressing gas requirements amidst the ongoing supply crisis, users are falling victim to the trap set by this scam.
What is the Modus Operandi Behind the LPG Booking Scam?
In most instances, the links embedded in these messages are designed to closely resemble the official websites used for LPG bookings. However, clicking on these fraudulent links can result in significant financial loss. These links typically prompt you to provide your personal details, OTPs, or bank account information. In many cases, they instruct users to scan a QR code—a maneuver that can result in the complete draining of a customer's bank account. Furthermore, scammers have been observed asking users to download unknown applications; in reality, these fake portals are specifically engineered to steal your financial data and siphon off your money. To stay safe, please heed the following warning instructions outlined in this advisory; if you encounter any of these scenarios, exercise immediate caution:
Messages claiming to offer "instant booking" amidst an LPG shortage
Links that do not match the official website's URL
Links prompting the installation of unknown apps or the download of APK files
Requests for your OTP, PIN, or other banking details
The advisory explicitly states that official LPG providers never request sensitive details via unofficial links or unsolicited messages.
What should you do?
If you wish to book an LPG cylinder, stick to safe and secure options. Always make your bookings exclusively through the official app or the verified website of your LPG provider, and refrain from clicking on links received from unknown numbers. Additionally, cross-check the message before taking any action.
