Fake Calls: As soon as this service starts, you will get rid of fake calls, a big initiative by DoT and TRAI, know the full details..

To deal with the growing problem of fake calls and scamming on mobile phones, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and TRAI are now working fast towards implementing the Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) service. As soon as this service is implemented, the name of the caller will be displayed on every incoming call, which will curb cases of fraud and financial fraud.
What is the CNAP service?
CNAP, i.e., Caller Name Presentation, is a feature in which the same name of the caller will be visible on the incoming call, which is recorded on the registered ID of that SIM card. This service will be different from apps like True-Caller because only the real name will be visible in it. However, issues of privacy and technical challenges are also coming up with it.
Trial started, but confusion remains.
According to reports, big telecom companies like Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL have started the trial of the CNAP service in inter- and intra-circle. In testing, the user receiving the call is seeing the name of the caller on the screen. Despite this, operators believe that there is still a need for clear guidelines regarding displaying names in business and family connections.
Operators say that hundreds of SIM cards are purchased in the name of the company in business connections. In such a situation, when you make a call, will the name of the company be visible or that of an employee? Similarly, in family postpaid plans, many SIMs are issued on one ID, so in such cases, whose name will be displayed is still not decided.
TRAI's recommendations
TRAI says that the name of the caller will be displayed on the basis of the Consumer Application Form (CAF). This will help users to immediately identify whether the call is real or a scam. This service can prove to be a game-changer, especially in tracking internet-based VoIP calls and preventing scamming.
DoT wants to implement this service on all networks, but implementing it on the 2G network is the biggest challenge at present. Only after its solution, CNAP will be implemented across the country.
The government's stand
Union Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Shekhar told the Parliament that the final decision on implementing the CNAP service will be taken after the trial and assessment done by the telecom companies. DoT has asked the telecom operators to speed up preparations to launch it as soon as possible.
