The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a major convenience for Provident Fund (PF) subscribers. PF account holders no longer need to log in to the official portal to check their balance or view their passbook; the EPFO has launched a WhatsApp service. Subscribers can now find out their PF account balance instantly by simply sending a message from their smartphones.

Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, launched this facility on Sunday during the 74th Foundation Day celebrations of the EPFO. Through this verified WhatsApp service, subscribers can easily check their current PF account balance and view their passbook. They can also access details of their last five transactions—whether deposits or withdrawals—directly via WhatsApp.

**EPFO WhatsApp Service to Prove Highly Useful**

The primary objective of this initiative is to provide transparent and prompt services to millions of employees on a messaging platform they are already familiar with and frequently use, sparing them the need to visit offices for routine inquiries. According to the Ministry of Labour, the platform will also offer personalized guidance and technical support to members regarding processes related to the *Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana* (PMVBRY).

**Automatic Settlement of Inoperative Accounts**

In addition to the WhatsApp facility, the process for withdrawing funds from inoperative EPF accounts has also been simplified. The EPFO has announced that subscribers with balances of up to ₹1,000 in old or inoperative PF accounts will no longer be required to fill out a separate claim form to withdraw their money.

If the account holder’s identity and bank account details have been verified, the EPFO will automatically process the settlement and transfer the outstanding amount directly to the user's bank account, without the need for a formal application. According to data from the Ministry of Labour, this move will lead to the settlement of approximately 1 lakh inactive accounts, which hold about ₹5 crore in unclaimed funds.

EPFO has 8 crore members
Addressing the EPFO’s foundation day celebrations, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that over the course of its 74-year journey, the EPFO now manages a massive fund of ₹32 lakh crore, backed by the trust of more than 8 crore active members. The Minister urged officials to focus on worker-friendly innovations and to embrace technological changes to make processes entirely digital and transparent.
