EPFO 'Date of Exit' Rules: When you leave a job, recording the 'Date of Exit'—the exact date you left—is crucial for transferring your EPF balance from your previous company to your new one. It is common for the previous employer to forget to update this date on the portal, causing the PF transfer process to stall.

The good news is that you no longer need to make repeated visits to your former employer for this. EPFO allows members to update the 'Date of Exit' online themselves via the UAN portal. Let’s understand the rules and the step-by-step process to correct this in simple terms.

Understand these conditions before updating online

According to EPFO rules, you can mark the 'Date of Exit' yourself only if:

2-Month Gap: At least two months have passed since you left the job.
Month of Last Contribution: The date you enter must fall within the same month for which your previous employer last deposited your PF contribution.
Active UAN and Aadhaar Link: Your UAN must be active and linked to your Aadhaar.
Mobile Number: You must have access to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar card, as an OTP will be sent to it.

Step-by-step process: How to update the 'Date of Exit'?

If you meet all the above conditions, follow these simple steps:

Log in to the Portal: First, visit the EPFO Member Unified Portal and log in using your UAN, password, and captcha.

Select the 'Mark Exit' Option: Click on the 'Manage' tab in the top menu and select the 'Mark Exit' option from the drop-down list.

Select the Company: Choose the Member ID associated with the previous company for which you need to update the exit date.

Enter Date and Reason: Select the correct date of leaving and choose the appropriate reason for leaving the job. Make sure to verify the date against your salary slip or relieving letter. Click on 'Request OTP': After verifying all details, check the consent box and click on 'Get OTP'.

Verify and Submit: Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and submit it. Your 'Date of Exit' will be updated immediately.

How to cross-check in 'Service History'

Once the process is complete, to verify that the date has been recorded correctly:

Go to 'View' in the main menu and click on 'Service History'.

The 'Date of Exit' will appear next to the name of your previous company.

What to do if the date is already recorded incorrectly?

If your previous company has already entered an incorrect 'Date of Exit', the online system does not allow you to change it directly. In such cases, you must contact your previous company with your salary slip and relieving letter, or lodge a complaint via the EPFO grievance portal (EPFiGMS).

Important safety warning

EPFO advises its members never to share their UAN password, Aadhaar details, or bank account information with strangers or fraudulent callers. EPFO never asks for money for any service.
