EPFO: These 4 mistakes can stop interest payments into your PF account! EPFO itself explains when an account becomes 'inactive'..
For salaried individuals, the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is one of the safest and best avenues for saving and investment. The amount deposited in a PF account earns attractive annual interest, helping to build a substantial retirement corpus. However, are you aware that under certain specific circumstances, the accrual of interest on your PF account stops?
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has clarified the four specific situations in which a PF account is deemed 'inoperative,' resulting in the cessation of interest payments.
1. Retirement after the age of 55
According to EPFO rules, if an employee retires after attaining the age of 55 and does not withdraw funds from their PF account within the subsequent 36 months (3 years), the account is classified as 'inoperative.' Consequently, interest accrual on the account stops.
2. Permanent settlement abroad
The EPFO has also clarified that if a PF account holder leaves the country to settle permanently in another nation, their EPF account is immediately categorized as an inoperative account.
3. Demise of the PF account holder
In the unfortunate event of a PF member's death, the EPFO considers the account inoperative. No further interest is credited to the account in such a scenario. The nominee should file a claim in a timely manner.
4. Failure to file a claim within 36 months of the amount becoming payable
According to the EPFO, if the conditions for PF withdrawal have been met and the amount has become payable, yet the member fails to file a claim to withdraw the funds within the next 36 months, the account becomes inoperative due to this inaction.
EPFO's Advice
The EPFO frequently advises its members to always transfer the balance from their old PF account to their new account (using their UAN) whenever they change jobs. Doing this keeps your account continuously active and allows you to keep earning compound interest on your deposited funds without any interruption.
