**Over 1.5 Million Higher Pension Claims Received**
Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, stated in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that 1,524,365 claims for higher pensions based on higher wages have been received. Of these, 11,595 claims were pending as of August 5. In November 2022, the Supreme Court directed the Centre to facilitate higher contributions to the pension scheme based on actual wages. It was following this directive that the process regarding higher pension cases moved forward.
**Demand to Increase Minimum Pension**
Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha MP K. Laxman has urged the government to consider increasing the minimum pension. He noted that the current minimum pension is ₹1,000, whereas the cost of food, medicines, and medical treatment has risen significantly. He advocated for increasing the pension in line with inflation and suggested considering affordable healthcare facilities for pensioners and their spouses.
As of March 31, there were 8,584,604 pensioners under the Employees' Pension Scheme. By that same date, a total of ₹15,819.28 crore had been disbursed under the scheme. According to the government, EPS 1995 has been replaced by EPS 2026.
