The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made significant changes to the features available on its Unified Member Portal. Following a system update in June, the facility to activate the Universal Account Number (UAN) has been removed from the EPFO portal.

Members must now use the government's UMANG app to activate their UAN. The good news is that you can easily activate your UAN on the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).

However, essential services such as UAN generation, application status checks, and death claims continue to function on the EPFO portal just as before.

What is the UMANG app, and what services are available there now?
UMANG stands for 'Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance.' It is a government app that offers a wide range of PF-related services directly on your smartphone, without requiring you to log in to the EPFO portal. You can now access the following six key services on the UMANG app:

UAN allotment and activation
UAN activation (single service)
Face authentication for an already active UAN
Answers to common questions regarding PF (FAQs)
Account details via SMS
Account details via missed call

These essential services remain active on the EPFO portal:
Tracking application status: You can easily track the current status of applications submitted for 'pension on higher wages' on the portal.

UAN allotment for old PF accounts: If you have a PF account but have not been allotted a UAN, you can verify your mobile number on the portal. Subsequently, by entering the required details, you can generate a new UAN and link it to your existing PF account.

UAN retrieval: If you have forgotten your UAN, you can retrieve it in just two steps. Enter your registered mobile number, upload proof of identity/address, and enter the OTP to instantly retrieve your UAN.

Filing Death Claims: Nominees (beneficiaries) can still file death claims, including pension claims, via the EPF portal. To do this, the beneficiary must have an active mobile number linked to Aadhaar and have their bank account details ready.

Documents required for EPF death claims:
Death certificate of the deceased member
Proof of the beneficiary's bank account (cancelled cheque or copy of passbook)
Proof of the beneficiary's date of birth (DOB proof)
All files must be in PDF format only.
No file size should exceed 2 MB.
File names must not contain any spaces.

Services on the EPFO portal and UMANG app were temporarily unavailable due to a major system migration during the last week of June. The primary objective of this major upgrade is to provide PF account holders with faster, more secure, and uninterrupted service.
