EPFO Limit Raised to ₹25,000: Will Your Salary Rise or Fall? Here’s How It Affects Your Pocket

The EPFO has raised its wage limit from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. While this change might slightly reduce your take-home salary, your total savings will double, creating a substantial retirement fund.

EPFO Wage: The Central Government has increased the EPFO wage limit from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. This hike—the first since 2014—will benefit approximately 51 lakh additional workers. If your basic salary falls between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000, this change will directly impact your monthly salary and your pocket.

Previously, employees starting jobs with a salary exceeding ₹15,000 were excluded from Provident Fund (PF), pension, and insurance coverage. Now, however, all new employees earning up to ₹25,000 will mandatorily receive these government benefits.

Will your salary increase or decrease?

The direct answer is: your take-home salary will decrease, but your total savings will double. This can be easily understood:
Under EPF rules, 12% of your basic salary is deducted, and your employer contributes an equal 12% share.
If your salary was ₹20,000, PF deduction was not mandatory, and you received the full amount. Now, however, 12% (i.e., ₹2,400) will be deducted from your salary. Consequently, the money available in hand for monthly expenses will drop by ₹2,400.

If the salary decreases, where is the benefit?

Only ₹2,400 was deducted from your pocket, yet ₹4,800 was deposited into your PF account. The company's contribution of ₹2,400 effectively serves as additional savings for you.
You will also earn attractive interest from the government on the entire accumulated amount, helping to build a substantial corpus by the time you retire.
Pension and Insurance: Once covered under this scheme, you become eligible for a lifelong pension under the EPS after completing 10 years of service. Additionally, you receive life insurance coverage of up to ₹7 lakh under the EDLI scheme at no extra cost.
